This morning at rounds, the attending physician said the last hurdle Penelope needs to over come is the bradycardia/desaturation issue. Penelope needs to go about 5 days without an episode before the team will start discussing discharge. The doctor warned this could drag on for weeks and said we should try not to get frustrated because Penelope will outgrow these. Penelope has 2-4 bradies/desats a day right now, mostly around feedings.
Other than the above, which really is not that big of a deal, Penelope is doing really well. Her weight is up to 2.37kg (5.22lbs). This morning, the opthamologist examined her eyes for ROP (he does this every 1-2 weeks) and her eyes look great. She is acting much more like a newborn now; basically she just eats, sleeps and dirties her diapers.
She discovered her cry over the weekend. Generally preemies don't cry that much because their lungs aren't very strong. Boy, are her lungs strong now! She had her first set of vaccinations over the weekend and she let it wail!
So for right now, we just have to be patient and be thankful for how far she has come. And keep in mind she still would be premature if she was born today.
Thanks for checking in. I'll update more later.
