Also, congratulations to Dr. Mertz!!! My sister graduated from medical school on Saturday and is now officially an MD. She starts her residency in pediatrics later this summer. Andrea is the reason why I have been able to understand and explain so much of Penelope's medical issues. She's explained everything in such a clear and accessible way. Andrea, thank you for all your help and support. We can never thank you enough. You're going to be an amazing doctor.
On to Penelope....
Penelope is doing so well today. To paraphrase Trent, we need to go to the hardware store to buy the biggest piece of wood to knock on. She's doing so well that we're kind of scared that she is due for a bad day. She keeps growing and looks so good. Today she weighs 1575g. This morning, the team decided to remove the nasal canula and let her try breathing on her own again. Unlike the other attempts, I have a pretty good feeling it will stick this time. But if it doesn't, that's ok. She'll breathe on her own when she's ready. Even if today is not the day, that day is coming soon.
Basically that is all the news today. In the NICU world, little news is good news.
